City Proposes to Build
Major Community Centre
in Don Mills
Proposed 5.5 Acre Site will have large regional aquatic centre, 2 ice rinks, walking track, gymnasium and multi-purpose space.
The City of Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation Department is proposing to build a major Don Mills recreation complex on the Celestica lands on Don Mills Road north of Eglinton Avenue.
This landmark project is in response to the need for more recreational facilities in the area, the planned growth from the new Don Mills Crossing community, and development at Eglinton Avenue and Leslie Street.
The proposed Preferred Facility includes a 6-lane swimming pool and leisure pool, full size gymnasium and an indoor walking track. There will be multipurpose rooms with the flexibility to be used for everything from public meetings to cultural events. And there will be two full sized ice rinks.
There is also an Alternate Proposal for two smaller facilities: an aquatic centre and arena at the Celestica site, with a gym and community meeting rooms at the Shops at Don Mills. This option, which spreads financial resources over two sites would require a third party operator for the Shops at Don Mills facility, where users would have to pay membership fees.
As part of this proposal the City is conducting extensive consultation with local communities. To date there have been meetings with stakeholder groups in Don Mills, Wynford/Concorde, and Flemingdon Park, with more planned in the upcoming weeks. Pop-up information sessions are on-going, bringing the plan to people in shopping centres and other public spaces. A public community open house is being planned for later in the spring.
It is a great honour to serve our community as Councillor and Deputy Mayor.
Our new Ward is large and diverse. It goes as far North as the 401, as far south as Gateway Blvd and the DVP, as far west as Leslie St. and as far east as Victoria Park.
We have nearly 95,000 residents and comprise many different neighbourhoods. They include Fenside, Parkwoods/Donalda, O’Connor Hills, Victoria Village, Flemingdon Park, Wynford Drive, Don Mills, and York Heights.
